2. Write a short note on work of Data link layer in OSI Model.

The data link layer is the second layer of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model, located above the physical layer and below the network layer. It plays an important role in facilitating reliable communication between adjacent nodes on a network link. Here’s a brief note on the function of the data link layer:

Functions of the Data Link Layer:

1. Encapsulation: The data link layer encapsulates the network layer packets into data frames for transmission over the physical medium. It adds header and trailer information to each frame, including the source and destination MAC (Media Access Control) addresses.

2. Addressing: The data link layer uses MAC addresses to uniquely identify devices on the same network segment. MAC addresses are used for frame delivery within a local network and are assigned by manufacturers to network interface cards (NICs).

3. Error detection and correction: The data link layer detects errors by adding a frame check sequence (FCS) to each frame. If errors are detected during transmission, the frame may be discarded or retransmitted to ensure data integrity.

4. Flow Control: The data link layer implements flow control mechanisms to manage the rate of data transmission between the sender and the receiver. This prevents data overflow and ensures that the receiver can process incoming frames at a manageable rate.

5. Media Access Control (MAC): The data link layer is responsible for controlling access to the physical medium in a shared media environment. It defines protocols and mechanisms for devices contending for access to the network, such as CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) used in Ethernet networks.

6. Logical Link Control (LLC): The data link layer also includes the logical link control sublayer, which establishes, maintains, and terminates logical links between network devices. It provides services such as framing, error detection, and flow control independent of the underlying physical medium.

Importance of Data Link Layer:

– The data link layer ensures reliable and efficient communications between adjacent network devices by handling framing, addressing, error detection, and flow control.

– It plays an important role in Ethernet LANs, where it controls access to the shared network medium and coordinates the transmission of data frames.

– By detecting and correcting errors at the data link layer, the data link layer helps maintain data integrity and reliability across network links.

In essence, the data link layer acts as a bridge between the physical and network layers in the OSI model, providing the services necessary to reliably transmit data between devices connected on the same network segment.
